Day 131: Boston (Ginger Bread House)

We went to Kairan's kindergarten to help him making a ginger bread house this morning. See how serious he was!

Amy helped him putting on more butter frosting so that he could stick the marshmallow snowman to the plate.

Happy decorating~

Because there were two classmates who hadn't arrived yet, Amy helped them to put on butter frosting first, and they can decorate themselves after they come.

After this, we went to Taipei Economic & Cultural Office to get document for Po-Shun and went to Super 88 market which is an Asian market to do grocery shopphing and get lunch. I noticed that Amy bought six packs of tapioca. Of course Jason is the first person I told, haha.

The rest of day was a normal Tuesday. Kids went to swimming class, and we had Taiwanese food as dinner, but there's something new every day for me to write about.

Day 8: "Sometimes it's the people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine." - 《The Imitation Game》

Putting this sentence in my international contest speech, I hope that I'll be the the one who does things that no one can imagine.

Day 130: Boston (New England Aquarium, MIT, NBA)

I went to New England Aquarium in the morning. The very first exhibition is the penguins. They're sooooo cute~~

Close up~ They're not baby penguins, they're just small and cute.

Since it's aquarium, most of the exhibitions are tanks. Flashlights are not allowed, and I don't want to take pictures with glass in between, so didn't take a lot of pictures. I didn't check the schedule of training, but I happened to see the 12:30 fur seals & sea lions training.

This is a fur seal.

This is a sea lion. He knows how to play hide and seek.

I got some gifts for mom and Amanda. Korean friend Jinsung told me to go to outlet and get my mom some brand bags, but I know she wouldn't like  it even if I spend a lot of money for her. I always want something thoughtful as gifts. Besides, although I don't like girl's stuff myself, I still know what'll catch Amanda's eyes. I picked an azure glass turtle decoration for mom and a turquoise dolphin tail fin necklace for Amanda. (I like it myself, it's just I won't have any opportunity to wear it, haha.) Hope they'll like it.
我挑了一個湛藍的玻璃烏龜裝飾給媽咪還有一個藍綠色的海豚尾鰭項鍊給Amanda(我自己很喜歡,但我根本不可能有機會戴XD) 希望她們會喜歡。

The aquarium is next to the bay, so I got to see the sea which suits my need of salty water now, haha. It's cloudy, but looking at sea is soothing no matter what.

This is definitely the best way cheering up.

You can take whale seeing cruise here.

I like how the reefs and rocks look like under the sea.

Cruises.

This is how the harbor looks like.

I don't know why I took this picture, but seeing the Argentina blue rope hanging on the rail, I want to take this picture.

Close up of the cruise, and the reflection. I don't like this picture though, it doesn't seem that good, haha.

Although there's no snow yet, the winter scene in Boston is beautiful anyway.

I like how the sun affects how it looks like on the corner of this intersection.

Christopher Columber Park. It's not a big park, but since Ernie said he's only free after three, I still have one more hour, this is the place my travel book recommended to go, and it's not far, I'm here.

How the corridor looks like with the trees next to it.

The corridor.

This is Christopher Columbus Park, haha.

I didn't notice that the park is actually next to the harbor, haha. Took another harbor picture from this angle.

What caption to give? Um, flowers on the tree? Forget it.

Finally got a colorful picture in such cloudy day.

On the bridge.

Meeting up with my dear Toastmasters president, Ernie Ho!!! at MIT~~ He gave me a tour of his campus. This weird-looking building complex is where his department is.

Because their former principal said "Getting an Education from MIT is like taking a drink from a Fire Hose," students in 1991 made this, and the school kept it until now.

One of Ernie's classrooms.
Ernie

Ernie told me to look at the third line excitedly, it's Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd.!!! One of the companies that helped building this complex.

Morris Chang, the founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. He's an alumni of MIT. This is the list of those who helped building this complex.

Beautiful MIT campus at night.

I still remember that because a lot of us were going to either exchange or graduate last semester, Ernie sang Eason Chen's Long Time No See, and said maybe someday in the future, we'll meet up at a cafe on the corner. I burst into tears after he sang it.  This is the cafe on the corner of his office. However, when I brought it up to him, he said I'm ridiculous!!! I took the picture when he went upstairs to get stuff.

The last big event of the day is the NBA game!!! Celtics vs. Wolves. It's a Celtics game with Kevin Garnett!!! Totally my dream comes true. Because of terrorism, we couldn't even bring our backpacks inside. Ernie went back to his office to put our backpacks... Fortunately, the game was awesome. Celtics won, and throughout the game, the audiences kept shouting "We want KG." I bet at least half of the people here today were here for KG. He wasn't on the list though, so he walked to the court and waved to the crowd when there's one minute left on the clock.

Day 7: "Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you'll still land among the stars."- Norman Vincent Peale

This is my attitude towards every challenge I take and every opportunity I seize.

Day 129: Boston (Learn Something New Every Day)

I wrote my reviews on Star Wars this morning, and because of receiving encouragement and feedback from GVO teachers, I know that there are people who really wait for and read my reviews, even though I'm not writing for The Aquinas during winter vacation, I still want to keep writing English reviews.

After taking Sports Writing for a semester, now I know how football works, but I've never watched a full game because my roommates don't watch it in our apartment. Finally, I watched a full football game with Po-Shun this afternoon, and of course we rooted for New England Patriots, haha. Best of all, they won.

I was going to play Go in the afternoon originally, but I forgot that there's no bus service on Sunday, so I didn't go eventually. At least I got to watch a football game which still let me learn something new every day.

We went to The Cheesecake Factory for dinner, and I had Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich. The waitress gave my sandwich to others, and what we didn't understand was why Po-Shun's meal was still the last one to come when mine was already sent to the wrong table. lol

Day 6:
"I knew that if I failed I wouldn't regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying." - Jeff Bezos

This is the reason why I'm always willing to take challenges and try something new. This is one of my favorite quotes, but picking it as the sentence today is somehow both optimistic and pathetic. Apparently this is an optimistic sentence, but the reason why I'm doing is that I want to get rid of sadness. Well, finding something else to be sad about is the best way forgetting sadness. (What!?) No, just kidding, but I was mourning for education again today. I've asked to come to the US for 10 years. Although I'm finally here, it's different and a little bit late. If you ask me half a year ago, going to grad school would never be an option. Now I'm really stressed out, just because I mentioned this idea a week ago, I become someone not proactive enough if I'm not trying to do so. What they don't know is I lost my motivation... then if I can't get a job here, why not just go back to stay with my parents, who I love and will love me forever.

Day 128: Boston (Star Wars)

We went to see Star Wars today, so I have two reviews to work on. It's probably the best movie of the year, and I gave it 9.2/10. After the movie, we had ShakeShack as lunch, third time so far.

After we got back home, I listed the outline I plan to write about the movie, and did some research on it since I'm not a Star Wars fan, really have less knowledge about it. Even though I finished the preparation, I haven't started writing my reviews because I'm too tired that I took a short nap and then my cousins' friends came to visit.

We had Bertucci's for dinner, and watched three episodes of Batman cartoon.

Day 5:
"It's so hard to say, but I've gotta do what's best for me. You'll be okay."
"I gotta leave but I'll miss you." - Gotta Go My Own Way 《High School Musical 2》

I really think I'm good enough to take my friends' advice more. I know I have to do what's best for me, and be a little bit more selfish. :)

Day 127: Boston (TV Day)

Amy asked me to stay home today because the alarm company's coming to fix the sensor, but apparently they ended up not coming. Even so, I still had a relaxing day.

I finished watching Marry Me, or Not episode 3 in the morning, and after Amy came back from kids' party at school, I watched Mission Impossible: The Rogue Nation. I gave it 8.4/10. Happy seeing Roy Chiu and Jeremy Renner, totally made my day~~

We watched cartoons during dinner time, and I learned some words from Kairan. I learn more from kids than at school when I'm here, haha.

After dinner, I asked Po-Shun why he doesn't want to be a doctor anymore. He said because it's boring, but he's still a doctor, once every two weeks, haha. Since we started this topic, he talked about the interviews he went through, and I asked him what interest did he mention during the interviews. Yes, I was right. It's Wing Chun. He chartered Wing Chun club and First-aid club in Johns Hopkins, so he talked about these two a lot.

I skyped with Emily before bed. I'm grateful that we have such convenient way to communicate with friends who are on the other side of the earth.

Day 4:
"I can be good, and I will." - Jason Huang

After I delivered my C9 speech using C7 script, I have to decide whether I'm going to talk about my adventure here or my English teacher in junior high for my C10. This is the sentence Jason gave us when we were in 9th grade. Not until recently that I know how my confidence attracts people around me and influences them, and this is one of the sentences I use to encourage myself and tell me to believe in myself whenever I face a difficulty. Therefore, sitting in front of my laptop, I deleted "We've been told to think outside of the box...", and started to reconstruct my C10 speech.

1. Moat (n.):護城河
2. Hanukkah (n.):

Day 126: Boston (Meeting Up With An Old Friend)

Better stop writing something strange in a bilingual diary or I get double amounts of concern from friends, haha.

I accompanied Amy to buy chocolate and gift cards for kids' teachers in the morning, and we went grocery shopping at Wegmans after that.

I watched "Marry Me, or Not?" in the afternoon, funny enough, the tag line for episode three is "A girl doesn't know how many frogs she has to kiss before she meets the real prince."

Anyway, the most important thing today is to meet up with an old friend and play Go!!! It's a place called Diesel Cafe, and I was so surprised to see thick board and thick stones!!! William is a friend whom I met at Cheng Kung University Go Winter Training Camp in 2012. He was learning Chinese there, and came back to his hometown, Boston, to pursue his MBA later. He plays Go at least three times a week.

I played one game with Dan. Although I lost, I'm glad that I gained the feeling back, the ambitious, competitive and strategic mood I have whenever I play Go. I get to really focus and think.

After the game, William took me to the Christmas party of his company. This is the food provided at the party.

There were a lot of people chatting, socializing, and what a small world!!! We met two Taiwanese people. Well, this is not surprising at all. Something more interesting came when they asked William and me how we met each other, and Lenny said one of her friends' brother is a professional player in Taiwan. What!!!??? "What's his name?" I asked. "Cheng Hao Hsiao." What!!!??? Not only her friend's brother is the top one player in Taiwan, I happen to know him in person!!!

Before William drove me back, we talked to some other people at the party. It was fun and a first time experience for me.

Day 3:
"The cure of anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea." --Isak Dinesen, The Deluge at Norderney, Seven Gothic Tales, 1943

Our handsome Toastmaster Alex Jan shared an article which includes this sentence today to promote his working out class. I like it, and decided to pick it as my sentence today. However, I can't really sweat when I'm in Boston, and I don't think I get to see the sea, but tears already left me, so I think I have to drink salt water, haha.

Watching a video shared by a friend, I noticed something. There's a comment saying "2 weeks, still on step 1." I told you my superpower is amazing self-control: "2 days, and I'm on step 3: rebuilding."  I "want to go out, socialize, meet new people", I "talk, laugh, even flirt(no... rolled my eyes with this one, haha)"  because I know I have a lot of friends who love me, and some even sent me voice messages which supposed to make me cry, but I kept laughing listening to them. Yes, I'm rebuilding myself.

Day 125: Boston (Museum of Fine Arts)

This is the reason why I always tell people busy is good. If you keep yourself busy, you won't have time to think of something bad. I finally fell asleep after I cried until I'm too exhausted yesterday, and that made me tired this morning, but my trip to Museum of Fine Arts today healed me, 2/100 of me.

Because the museum is big, I chose to attend four guided tours, and used the time in between to see the other displays I'm interested in.

The first tour was Highlights of the Museum Collections. I didn't take pictures of all the collections we saw, only some. This is The Rotunda Dome which locates at second floor after walking up from the stairs you see at the main gate. The paintings are visions of the museum.

This is how it's like looking down from the stairs.

Guanyin.
觀音

This collection was called Untitled, and made of Styrofoam cups. The artist was famous for repetitive pieces of art. Some people think this work looks like a cloud while others think it's reproducing cells. What do you think?

There are six flying figures hanging along this hallway. It's called "I thought I could fly"

Seeing from the other side of the hallway, there's a contemporary painting on the wall.

European dining room. Trying to imitate the the authentic dining room, the display of the plates, the paintings on the wall and the spacious room give you a royal ambiance.

Juno. She's 130 pounds, and 13 feet. The tallest Greek mythology statue in the US, and because she was in a garden of a wealthy family in Brookline, MA for more than a hundred years, they spent two years to clean her up.

I didn't have a good chance to take this picture when we walked up.

King of Giza at the time. The head is small because it's depicted as if looking from downside.

The second tour was Introduction to the Contemporary Collection. I took a picture of this because apparently it's something mom would like. A piece of art made of glass and ink, very amazing work!

This collection is interesting. Take a look at next picture~

A lot of mountains and valleys appear with a different angle.

Mirror infinite collection.

different angle

They are bottle wrappers.

The full collection looks like this. The artist used bottle wrappers as his material to accuse water pollution. The black part represents the black rivers.

It's a simple color ladder collection, but...

It includes good calculation, if you look it from the red side, it looks like a rectangular instead of a trapezoid.

I didn't like this collection in particular, but Marty loves red guitar, of course I have to take a picture of this piece of art, haha.

This collection was made of a painting and some hay. Interesting is that there's glass over this piece of art, but not because of protection, but because whenever there are people pass by and their reflections look like people in the woods.

There are some holes on this collection that people can look into this piece of art. The beehive-like structure, dirt-like cover on the wires and patch-like sections make you feel like looking into the universe.

This collection is called "Wing", but the liquid-like representation gives it an interesting look.

This collection was made by a Japanese artist who died when he was 28 years old because of an explosive making art. He used a lot of different material to make this piece of art, and cut it into three parts when some of the material was liquid and still hot. This nature-like wok was born!

The third tour was Art of the Ancient World. I didn't take any picture of this tour, not that I don't like the collections of this section, but because they're usually more scary if I keep the pictures. (sounds so superstitious, haha) No, I'm just not interested in keeping photos of mummies or things like that.

The last tour I had today was Art of Europe. Since there's only me on the tour, it became a private one. I asked a lot of questions, and because it's European art, a lot of the contents are related to Western Literature, I had some great discussions with the volunteer guide.

It's the dining room again, but there's much less people now, so I took another picture.

She told me how the monarchs treated their guests using the utensils on the wall, and how the liquor urn and rinsing urn work. I asked her whether they used ladder to retrieve the plates back then, she said she doesn't know, but it's a good question cuz even now, it's seems extremely difficult for us to get the upper ones.

I took this picture because I think mom would like it. Furniture in this room was the "salary" an American merchant received during the France Revolution because France government wasn't able to pay him money.

I seldom appeared in pictures in my diary, but because this became a private tour, my guide suggested that we could take a picture together. In front of her favorite collections in the room: Monet's Water Lilies series, we took a picture and ended my awesome day at the Museum of Fine Arts.

It's also my first time taking subway and bus back home myself. It's convenient and easy, and the most awesome of all was that I asked a Korean for directions at bus station in Boston. After that, we chatted for a while. She used to be a psychologist in Korea, and now teaches Korean here in the US. I feel so happy that I could have the conversation.

I bought two decks of play cards for mom and a set of color pencil for Amanda. I don't like shopping and spending money, but I like buying thoughtful gifts for people I love.

Day 2:
Everything happens for a reason... sometimes good things fall apart so better things can come together.

I just wanted to find an optimistic quote every day to cheer myself up while I'm counting, but this somehow matches what I need. I'm pretty sure 2/100 of me was put together.
